Backyard Braai

Backyard Braai

Published by Noeline Heaton on 16th Oct 2020

South Africans love to braai, and any excuse will do! We braai over the weekend just because it is relaxing, we braai during the week to connect with family, we have birthday braais, Christmas braais, or just to get-together with friends braais. We braai indoors, outdoors, on the beach or in the bush.

Whatever your reason for gathering around a fire to cook and catch-up, one thing is certain - every braai includes lots and lots of good food! With a few minor modifications you can enjoy a healthier braai experience without worrying about your waistline.

Our top tips for a healthy braai day:

  • Grilling food is one of the best ways to cook because you use much less (if any) oil on a grill, as opposed to sautéing or roasting, which will help you to reduce your calorie intake. Of course, the type of meat you eat also matters. Try to avoid fatty meats and stick to lean cuts of steak, chicken or fish as an alternative to fatty meats like lamb chops.
  • Add some veg to the mix. Mielies, eggplant, mushrooms, onions, zucchini, and bell peppers are excellent options.
  • There are some great low-sugar or lower calorie sauce alternatives available. Spice up your day with some variety - try mustard, salsa, horseradish, and hot sauce.
  • Replace the high calorie drinks with healthy mocktails & lower calorie drink recipes.
  • Put a healthy twist on traditional puds to reduce calories without sacrificing on flavour.

Designate the braaimaster, grab the tongs, get outdoors and let the braai begin! Head over to our Safari and Braai box for our favourite braai recipes and to order your gluten-free ingredients.
